Following Legends Night, Mustafa Ali was on Raw Talk and delivered a vitriol filled diatribe towards the WWE legends, while making the valid point that they had eaten up television time that could’ve been used to help get younger and underutilized talents over. The fallout of the promo wound up having Ali tweeting out that WWE couldn’t trust him with a live microphone again.
While it’s been reported that was a tweet to help get himself over further and help build his character, a Q&A on Fightful Select with Sean Ross Sapp revealed that Ali may have actually upset someone with his comments. During the promo, Ali referenced piped in crowd responses to the legends, showing that WWE made the crowd think what they wanted about the legends.
“I had heard that there was someone who took exception to him making light that they pipe in stuff… I asked about this, I was like, ‘What would anyone be mad at?’ And they’re like, ‘Well he said that they piped in noise.’ I said, ‘They do!’ And this person said, ‘Yeah, but we don’t want them going out there and saying that.’ I’m like, ‘Why not? It’s obvious. It’s okay. Baseball does it. Football does it. Basketball does it. Don’t treat us like we’re stupid!’”
The piped in noise is a topic of frustration among talent. Obviously the WWE is using the crowd reactions to help lean people towards who they want. A push of a button is all it takes to turn the reaction one way or the other, and it’s unfortunately affecting creative in the sense they don’t know what is actually working with the crowd at home.
It’s also worth noting that in our previous report about this promo, nobody said anything about heat with Ali over the comment.
